A Tiny Bit of Snow!

We had a snow day today! Ok, there was already no school thanks to the holiday weekend, but the snow was enjoyable anyways. We only had a couple inches and it began to melt almost immediately because it’s been so warm. H1, H3, and I had a good time though. Since H3 is still pretty sick, we only let her come outside for about 15 minutes. This is the only snow we’ve had this year, and I would have felt bad if she had to miss it completely. She’s doing better today than the past couple days. The snow was quite exciting for her and she had a great time outside helping Daddy build a snowman.

Auntie Amber bought a new dress-up dress for H3, an official Rapunzel dress. H3 was ecstatic and has been wearing it all day!

Mid-February

Despite the up and down temperatures and fighting illnesses, we’ve still been trying to spend time together as a family doing enjoyable activities. Since I’m still working, I’m also making sure that I spend a lot more quality/productive time with H3 when I’m off.

We met my friend Robyn and her daughter, Julie, over in Williamsburg one day for our girls to have some fun at a park.

Afterwards, we took them to lunch at Panera and then browsed around Barnes and Noble. The girls loved the Lego block set in the middle of the store!

We also stopped in a girls’ clothing store to see if there were any sales. Our girls found plenty to amuse themselves, can’t you tell?

H3 and I made homemade animal crackers one afternoon. She likes them plain, but I prefer them with honey spread on the top! Mmmmmm. They are made with whole wheat flour and oats as the base, and not a whole lot unhealthy for you, so they provide a nice filling snack!

A couple Saturdays ago, I was driving toward the ferry and Williamsburg to meet up with some ladies from church to go to a salt spa. I was really looking forward to the day—a chance to relax and spend some time with friends. Less than 6 miles from the ferry I felt my car lurch. For a moment, I hoped everything was ok and I could continue my trip, but seconds later I heard that tell-tale thumping sound that accompanies a flat tire. I was on a 2-lane highway with no shoulder, so I pulled partially onto the grass and hopped out to take a look. Yep, completely flat rear tire. Since I’m not supposed to lift a lot of weight right now, I called H1 and he said he’d get H3 in the car and come get me. While I was waiting for them, I pulled the spare and all the tools to change the tire and then sat back. H1 was able to change the tire pretty quickly. While he was doing that, I walked back alongside the highway and found the culprit. A 3 inch bolt. Apparently if you hit one at 55mph, it will puncture your tire. So much for my spa day. H1, H3 and I took both vehicles for a 30 mile drive to the nearest place we could get a new tire. Pizza ended our day, which I have to say was good despite all. My tire flattened, but I didn’t get in an accident, and I was able to have a good time at dinner with my family.

Valentine’s Day was fun this year. We celebrated the weekend before, mostly. H3 got cards and a cute heart purse from her grandparents, and a card from her Pop-pop. Pop-pop also sent this adorable gift box with candy and a plush puppy inside.

H1 gave me a box of chocolate covered strawberries…

And a bouquet of roses! Since Valentine’s Day was on a Tuesday and we were both working, we didn’t go out for a special dinner this year. It was still sweet though, and I think we all enjoyed a special day to say “I love you”.

20 weeks pregnant…

H3 working on an alphabet puzzle yesterday morning after breakfast.

A family trip we took to the Portsmouth Children’s Museum. H3 enjoys the train room.

H1 likes the bubble room

Of course H3 likes it too

Outside the house on the second floor of the museum.

Checking out a picture of a planet in the little telescope.

Rockets made from soda bottles.

Yesterday ended with a long drive to Hampton and a visit to an urgent care. H3 has had a cold/allergy thing going on for the past couple weeks. Last Monday, our family doctor put her on Amoxicillian in hopes that it would help clear this thing out of her system. She’s had difficulty breathing and a lot of coughing at night, though during the day it’s just a runny nose and coughing. Well, late yesterday afternoon her temperature spiked to 103.9. Something just didn’t seem right to me, especially considering the week of antibiotics, and I wasn’t confident that waiting until Tuesday would be a good thing. The doctor at the urgent care tested for the flu, which was negative, and checked for mono, but her stomach and throat didn’t match up for that either. An x-ray showed her lungs are clear, so that’s good. He said that based on her symptoms and the fact that there is a sudden onset of a high fever following a couple weeks of this cold-thing (despite the antibiotics), he thinks she is developing a viral pneumonia. We’re supposed to finish the initial round of antibiotics, but he didn’t want to add any others to it and I agreed with him. What we’re doing now is watching her temperature for the next 4 days to see if the fever will go down on its own and monitor her coughing to make sure she doesn’t get fluid in her lungs. The urgent care is planning to call us on Monday to see how she is doing and discuss possibly bringing her back in for re-evaluation.

H1 is also feeling a little off. He’s been pretty tired and our yo-yo weather has had him struggling with allergies from the budding plants. I’m looking forward to a warm spring, lots of fresh air, and steady temperatures! Yesterday was in the low 60s, and today we have sleet and are expecting maybe an inch of snow tonight.

Off to make lunch for my family. Blessings!

Mom Moments of Confession

I absolutely love being a mom. Little H3 is a very energetic child who is pretty much a hurricane of energy from the time she wakes up until the time she goes to bed at night. The noise level is equivalent as well. She has two volumes: loud and louder. Well, maybe three, if you count the sleeping volume. That volume isn't entirely silent either. She often sings in her sleep. I've found each stage of her three years to bring delights and challenges. So many moments I want to hang onto and never let go. And then there are other things that I can't wait for, like her being able to make her bed. Yes, I know a three year old is capable of at least pulling up the covers, but from ground level, H3 cannot reach her bed. It's a pretty high captains bed, with storage drawers underneath.

Something else I'm looking forward to is better focus on cleaning up toys! H3 is pretty good on a small scale when I ask her to pick up the toys in her room. Today was not such a day. The best way to put it, I suppose, is to say that it looked like her room barfed all over my house. How one little child can create such chaos in a matter of a couple hours, I'm not sure, but she certainly succeeded. It was far beyond her ability to clean quickly, so I wound up doing a good portion of it. Generally that's just something I just chalk up to being part of the territory of mom-hood, but once I have to start moving furniture to chase down the stray toys, I blame it purely on my mischievous munchkin!

Something I am proud of her for though, is her memory. I find a child's mind fascinating. She was taking a bath earlier and singing Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Thanks to my college roommate Bethany and her gift of GT and the Halo Express last year, I often hear my daughter singing Bible verses throughout her day. Granted, she doesn't always get the references in at this age, but just the fact that she is already hiding God's word in her heart brings delight to this mom! Children's minds are like sponges. They soak up everything! Good and bad. I have another story about that too, a more embarrassing one.

My friend Robyn and I were in Williamsburg shopping one day. We stopped in a Victoria's Secret store to check out their semi-annual sale and H3 was with me. This was months ago. She pointed to an article of clothing and asked if it was underwear. I told her no, it was called a bra. My mistake. Since then, H3 has regularly pointed out bras, much to my dismay and despite my attempts to explain to her that it isn't really appropriate to discuss undergarments in public. The worst case was on Thursday, when we were sitting in the waiting room at the Sussex County Health Department. There were quite a few people in the room. Out of nowhere, H3 walked up to me, pointed to me, and said quite loudly, "Mommy has a bra!" I wanted to melt into the floor. Again with that whole child-has-a-mind-like-a-sponge thing!

On another happy note, it is once again a beautiful day in the 60s. H1 is working today for Surry Parks and Rec, helping them out with the multiple basketball games that are running today. H3 and I had a leisure morning, for once. We took a walk around the neighborhood early this morning, while it was still chilly, and came back inside for warm cocoa with multi-color marshmallows. Yum!

I have Monday and Tuesday off before returning to work on Wednesday. I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with H3, and seeing another friend with her daughter on Monday!

A Breeze through January

We have had an unseasonably warm winter so far, with quite a few days in the 60s. On one such Saturday, H1 and I took H3 to a park for an hour in between shopping trips. H3 loves this tall slide!

A friend was kind enough to watch H3 for a Sunday afternoon and evening so H1 and I could go out for a movie and then dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings. The Green Bay/NY Giants game was on that day. I’m a Packers fan and H1 is a Giants fan. It was a fun and relaxing date day for us!

Last weekend, one of my college roomies (Auntie Amber) came over and spent the night on Friday. Saturday morning I made cinnamon rolls—yes, homemade from scratch. They turned out quite yummy and fluffy, much to my delight. H1 is usually the baker of cinnamon rolls around here, so I was pretty happy with myself.

H3 has a set of blocks in her room that she loves to play with. She spent a while building towers with Auntie Amber.

Sunday after church found H1 and H3 back in her room, building towers yet again!

I am still substituting up at the middle school. Up until this week I was working as a second teacher in both 6th and 8th grade classrooms. This week was a testing week for the school, and next week I will be filling in for the Spanish teacher. After that, I’m not sure. I may be done at the school or I may still be substituting. That part is up in the air right now!
Progress towards closing on our new house is continuing fairly smoothly. There’s a contractor working on the house right now, and he plans to be done by Monday at the latest, which is in plenty of time for the Feb. 10th scheduled closing. I’m getting a whole new bathroom out of all this, complete with a new tub and shower, and new tile that I even got to pick out! I was so surprised when we got a call last Friday, asking if we wanted the original tile back in or if we wanted to pick out something new. Off H1 and I went to Lowes and found a nice new tile. I can’t wait to see everything in place! After closing, we’re planning to spend the rest of February painting and changing a few things before we move in at the end of the month. As soon as we get things ready, I’ll be taking pictures!

Ok, just a brief note since I’ve got to get dinner ready for my hungry family. Blessings!

January, week 1

Well, I survived! I made it through the first week of school substituting for the special education teacher who left over Christmas break. I've been juggling 2 sixth grade classes (Physical Science and History) and 2 eighth grade classes (Physical Science and English). I have to say that I am very impressed with the teachers I've been working with. All the classrooms are inclusion classrooms, so I work with another teacher to aid specific students in the class. I have found these teachers to be very caring and they have given me so many ideas for ways I can adapt to teaching H3 at home. Given that my substituting position will be for an undetermined length at this point, I'm thankful that I enjoy working with these teachers, and with the students. The principal has told me that I will be working at least through next week, and possibly longer, until they are able to fill the position. I miss being home with H3, but it's nice to be able to help out the family.

H3 is staying with a woman by the name of Jackie during the day. She wakes up each morning asking to "go see Ms. Jackie." When I drop her off, I rarely get a goodbye, unless I ask for one. H3 takes off for the toy room and has the biggest smile on her face when we arrive at the house. Jackie is a very sweet Christian lady, a young grandmother, who watches a few children in her home near the schools. There is a fun playroom, complete with tent, and the kids also get to help her out in the kitchen. She has a fabulous fenced in play area out back, and during the week, she'll take the older ones over to the hen-house to help feed the chickens and gather eggs. Stories are read to the kids everyday, and there are weekly trips to the library. I prefer to have H3 at home with me, of course, but since I have to take her somewhere, I'm so thankful to have found Jackie!

Time to make dinner. Homemade pizza and wings are on tonight's agenda!

Fun Moments with Family

The snow has just stopped falling. It was really pretty, but no accumulation on the account of it being so warm here in OH. My dad has spent this morning playing with H3 and it's been fun to watch. H1 and H3 came upstairs a bit before me. After I showered and made it up the stairs, I heard her giggling from inside the pink castle tent my parents gave her for Christmas. Sure enough, I also heard my dad's voice coming from inside!

Right how she's trying to get him to play grocery store. Apparently, we need to get onions and cookies. She likes the latter, but not the former, so not sure why those are on her grocery list, but it's funny! Moments ago, my dad was humming the theme music to "Jaws" and chasing her around the living room with a couple stuffed animals. Her giggling is hilarious to watch! She thinks it's the best thing ever. I love watching my daughter play with her grandpa! My mom hasn't been feeling the best this time around, but H3 is still enjoying seeing her. They read books together and play with her new toys. It's cute!

We've gotten to take a few drives to see the Christmas lights people still have out, and that's been a fun family activity. H3 loves all the lights and so does Grandma!

Our home inspection is set up for next Monday, January 2nd, at 4pm. We're heading back from OH tomorrow afternoon, and we're planning to have a fairly quite New Year's weekend. I'm trying to plan something fun for celebrating H1's birthday. I'll let you know what I come up with!

Merry Christmas!

We've had a very busy Fall season, thus the lack of posting on here. I'll try to get back to that, but we'll see. As a part of this season of giving, I want to add two things that I'm thankful for that God has given us this year. First, given that the inspection and appraisal go well, H1 and I will be closing on our new home on February 10th! We found out just a couple days ago that our offer was accepted, and that completely took us by surprise. We made an offer on a house that we really liked, but we offered a significant amount less, expecting the owners to counter our offer. They didn't. They accepted the whole offer, including payment of closing costs. After four years of renting in this area, it looks like our little family will finally have a home!

The second event of thankfulness is more monumental. I'm happy to announce that our family is growing! We are expecting the arrival of H4 in July! This has been a difficult first trimester for me. All the worst possibly symptoms of pregnancy hit me full force from the 4th week and continue unabated. I'm really looking forward to the hopeful decline of some of these issues within the next few weeks. We've been in to the doctor several times so far, including the ultrasound. Our little H4 seems to be doing very well and so far my general levels of bloodwork are stable. They are concerned about my thyroid, since the pregnancy and birth of H3 caused quite a few issues for me. For now though, we are giving thanks to God for this little miracle, whom we had been praying for!

In the beginning of December, H3 and I made a trip to Florida to visit a dear college friend, Kristina, and her husband. We had a wonderful time catching up and getting the house ready for the birth of her little one. She gave birth a week after we left to a beautiful little girl. My friend and her husband work at a Christian boys ranch, called Teen Challenge. H3 and I spent a lot of mornings walking around the property. The days were in the 60s and 70s while we were there, perfect for our walks. I'm so thankful that God paved the way for us to make that trip.

The Christmas season finds us in Ohio, visiting my family. It's quite chilly up here, but beautiful as always. My parents are having a wonderful time watching H3 with all her little antics. If I could ask for prayer for 2 things before I close out, one would be for our precious baby, and the other would be for my mother. Her health has not been good, and right now she is waiting for surgery on her right shoulder. She also needs a left knee replacement and reconstructive surgery on her right foot. Multiple falls over the past couple years are responsible for these complications. She's been having difficulty getting around. The shoulder surgery is scheduled for February 15th at this point, given that all the pre-op stuff goes well. This looks to be a long year coming up for her, and prayers for her recovery as she goes through these will be much appreciated. Thank you.

In the midst of everything this season, don't forget the reason for celebration, of His Gift to us! Blessings and Merry Christmas to you!
